2. Conception
The idea of making a film has been on my mind since I was a kid. For several faint reasons and complex circumstances, I became a photographer in stead of a filmmaker. Maybe that’s why I always try to tell a whole story in one single image.
Ten years ago, I started with video productions. It took me another five years to discover the essence of true communication trough a picture. This is where commercial photography ends and autonomous art photography starts to develop.
Since summer 2006 I have the facilities to make digital 35 mm movies. My wish to make an autonomous movie could finally be realized.
My artwork forms the basis for this film. I decided to select two images to start with. These images together could tell a marvelous story. But what story? After searching for a very long time, I discovered a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. I realized immediately that I had found what I was looking for. Everything just came together!
Borges tells a story about solitude, men’s inner space and the safe haven that our fantasy provides. It also shows that every man and woman has a beast within it’s beauty.
I adapted the story to a synopsis with the help of scenario writer Hanneke Hendrix and co-producer Thomas Jeninga.
